Using Discord To Create Community
Working With Students Online And In Person
IWe've been working hard at GAIA, putting together our GAIA Discord Server for Latin American musicians.
I run a site called www.vibesworkshop.com where I have a few thousand vibraphone players connected (didn't know there were that many of us, huh?). We built that server first to test the waters and learn the ins and outs of Discord.
GAIA is in partnership with Vibesworkshop.com and supports the Vibesworkshop Discord Server — so we now have two servers running: GAIA for Latin American Musicians, and Vibesworkshop.
While Discord is mainly known for gamers, it's actually a fantastic environment for building communities. It features dedicated stage channels and Zoom-like audio/video spaces perfect for chatting and collaborating with small groups of musicians. Our goal is to create a constant pipeline to students — allowing us to mentor them online year-round while setting up opportunities to meet in person, track their progress, and perform concerts together.
On the server, we can share lessons, upload lead sheets, and offer direct instruction. Students can then practice the material and post updates on their progress. This digital environment gives us a flexible, continuous way to engage with dedicated musicians anytime, anywhere.
We plan on rolling this out towards the end of this year.
